His Courtship

by Margaret Haberman

If you got in your car right now
you could be here by 3:00 a.m.
My doors are always unlocked.
All kinds of people make a habit
of coming into my house. I’m not
looking for something serious.
You should be driving by now,
composing poetry in your head.
You’re wasting valuable time.

There are lots of ladies
in AA that I could sleep with.
But at least with you, I know,
if it doesn’t turn out well,
you won’t leave graffiti
on the front door.
